Getting Back on Track

Getting our bodies back into balance after the holidays can be simple and effective. We just need to understand a few principals.

Most illness and diseases begin in the gut. Therefore, the first thing is to be sure that your digestion is working well. Cleansing is the first step. Understand the need for cleansing and find simple steps to detoxify the body at http://life.gaiam.com/article/10-ways-detoxify-your-body.

Everyday steps to get the digestion system moving are: Drinking a glass of water (with lemon) first thing in the morning (hot cup of water with lemon is even better). A good probiotic everyday and food enzymes help digest foods easier. As we get older, the hydrochloric acid decreases so the enzymes give us that boost that we need.

Secondly, DON”T SKIP MEALS!!!! That slows down the metabolism. Try to eat every 2 to 3 hours. This will increase the metabolism. Plan what you will eat for the day. Have nutrient dense or protein snacks available. This causes the body to require less food. My family enjoys the snacks from here: www.susanlifecoach.wholefoodfarmacy.com

Green drinks are another great food for in between meals. Nature Sunshine has a few. The products are of excellent quality. www.naturesunshine.com  Please include my sponsor # 2432046 if you choose to order any products.

Eating foods with sugar can cause cravings, fatigue and spike our blood sugar levels as well as other health issues. Those cookies and desserts were soooo good weren’t they? When you get a craving, eat a fresh fruit (the sugar in fruit reacts differently than other sugars and the fruit gives us fiber). Add some protein like a piece of cheese or a few nuts. I like almonds. I find having grapes on the counter are very helpful. I don’t eat a lot of them but it satisfies my craving. Other suggestions are drink a glass of water, eat a piece of celery with the goat cheese and pomegranate. Remember that artificial sweeteners do not tell your body when it is satiated so your cravings will continue. Limiting alcohol is helpful too.

Increase healthy fats. We get a lot of Omega 6’s in our foods today so look for ways to increase the Omega 3’s. These help us feel satisfied so be sure to eat fish at least two times a week or take a fish oil or krill oil supplement. Look for one that contains both DHA and EPA. Other healthy fats can be found in olives, coconut oil, butter made from raw grass-fed organic milk, avacodos, organic pastured egg yolks, raw nuts (especially almonds & pecans), unheated organic nut oils, palm oil, and fats from grass-fed animals. The Green Polka Dot is an new on-line store that offers organic and non-gmo foods. You can find a variety of nuts and oils here at reasonable prices. http://www.greenpolkadotbox.com/rewardsref/index/refer/id/7517/

Lastly, but maybe most importantly is sleep. Sleep is very important in helping our bodies be in balance. Try to get 8 hours of sound sleep a night. Yes, that can be challenging but it can make a big difference in our energy levels as well as staying healthy. Getting to sleep by 10 is something to strive for as well. It is believed that between 10 and 12 midnight are the hours that we get our best restorative sleep.

These are a few ways in which you can balance your body to feel motivated, energized and healthy. I’d love to hear about ideas that have helped you get back into balance.

Up Date on Hydro-Fracking

Here is recent article related to Hydro-fracking. It talks about Pavilion, Wyoming. You have 3 days to let our New York government officials, legislatures and especially the government know that more studies, more time are needed before a final decision is reached on the highly controversial topic. Be informed! Your water supply is at risk.

EPA: ‘Fracking’ likely polluted town’s water

Pavillion Area Concerned Citizens released a photo saying it shows a hydraulic fracturing drill site in the Pavillion/Muddy Ridge gas field. The group said it was taken from the porch of its chairman, John Fenton.

A controversial method of drilling for oil and natural gas appears to be the cause of groundwater pollution in a central Wyoming town, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Thursday.

The EPA last month said it had found compounds associated with chemicals used in the drilling process known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, in the groundwater beneath Pavillion. Many residents say their well water has reeked of chemicals since the drilling began there and first complained to the EPA in 2008.

But until Thursday, the EPA said it could not speculate on where the contaminants came from.

In the draft report (.pdf) released Thursday, the EPA said that “the explanation best fitting the data … is that constituents associated with hydraulic fracturing have been released into the Wind River drinking water aquifer.”

Health officials had earlier advised residents not to drink their water after the EPA said it had found benzene and other hydrocarbons in wells it tested.

The process pumps pressurized water, sand and chemicals underground to open fissures and improve the flow of oil or gas.

The EPA emphasized that the findings are specific to the Pavillion area, noting that the specific type of fracking used there differed from fracking methods used elsewhere in regions with different geological characteristics.

The fracking occurred below the level of the drinking water aquifer and close to water wells, the EPA said. Elsewhere, drilling is more remote and fracking occurs much deeper than the level of groundwater that anybody would use.

The EPA is separately working on a national study of fracking.

Doug Hock, a spokesman for EnCana Corp., which owns rights to the Pavillion-area field, slammed the draft report. “The synthetic chemicals could just have easily come from contamination when the EPA did their sampling, or from how they constructed their monitoring wells.”

Pavillion residents who organized to seek the tests welcomed the report.

“We are grateful to the EPA for listening to our concerns and acting on them,” said John Fenton, chair of Pavillion Area Concerned Citizens.

Pavillion Area Concerned Citizens

Pavillion Area Concerned Citizens provided this photo of the home of John and Katherine Fenton. It said the haze was from fracking fluids vaporized in the drilling process and that it lasted for about 10 minutes. Similar releases happened a dozen times over 3 days, it added.

“This investigation proves the importance of having a federal agency that can protect people and the environment,” added Fenton, whose home is across from one drill site. “We hope that answers to our on-going health problems and other impacts can now be addressed and that the responsible parties will finally be required to remediate the damages.”

The industry contends that fracking is safe and its supporters were quick to blast the EPA.

“EPA’s conclusions are not based on sound science but rather on political science,” Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla, said in a statement. “Its findings are premature, given that the agency has not gone through the necessary peer-review process, and there are still serious outstanding questions regarding EPA’s data and methodology.”

“This announcement is part of President Obama’s war on fossil fuels and his determination to shut down natural gas production,” added Inhofe, the senior Republican on the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.

Fracking has opened up areas that were previously considered too costly to drill. The most promising include the Marcellus Shale formation in the Northeast.

Development of the new shale deposits over the last few years has provided the United States with a century’s worth of natural gas supply.

Pa. town near fracking fights to get bottled water back

In Pennsylvania, production from the Marcellus has led to an energy boom that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is keen to replicate by lifting an existing moratorium on using the fracking process.

But hearings on that proposal have been contentious.

At the last hearing last month, protesters gathered in downtown Manhattan to express concern about the safety of water supplies, holding signs saying “Governor Cuomo, don’t frack it up” and “Don’t frack with New York.”

“We have to be literally insane to contemplate fracking,” state Sen. Tony Avella told reporters outside the hearings. “Wake up Governor Cuomo, this is not going to provide jobs or revenue, but what it will do is poison the water supply for 17 million New Yorkers.”

Motivation

What motivates you to achieve your goals? We are bombarded by so much information that it is difficult to sift through it all and make intelligent decisions. What is true? What is marketing? What works for you? Stepping back and reflecting can be difficult in our fast paced life.

I have spoken about this topic before but I feel it is worth mentioning again because our motivation changes as time moves on, as our life changes, as we are faced with new challenges. Our ATTITUDE, I believe, has the greatest impact on our level of motivation. With a positive attitude, our motivation increases. With a negative attitude, our motivation decreases. We need to continually check our attitude and have ways to help us keep it positive.

In my search for ways to help with my attitude, I have found a wonderful video that I would like to share with you by Simpletruths.com. View at http://www.attitudeiseverythingmovie.com/  Perhaps these rules can be reminders to you each day or when your motivation is headed in the wrong direction that you CAN stay motivated as long as you keep a Positive Attitude.

Why Hire A Life Coach?

Have you ever wondered why a person would want to hire a life coach?

As you know we all have found life to be overwhelming at times. During those times would it help to have someone to talk with to help you prioritize or organize your life? Having someone who would encourage you and get you moving would be helpful, don’t you agree?

New Year Resolutions

It is that time or year when we try to implement New Year Resolutions.

So the most important resolution one can make is:

To Be Kind To Your Self!

As you start each day, thank yourself for something you have done or said.

Do At Least One Thing for You each day. Take time to relax, get a hair cut, talk to a friend, or meditate. Do something that makes you feel good.

Exercise even if it is for 5 min. Try to increase it each day but be sure to get those muscles working. Walk or do simple strength exercises if you don’t have the time to do more.

Eat something nutritious. We know that fruits and vegetables are important for good health. Antioxidants and fiber are two benefits. Have a fruit for a snack and be sure to have vegetables with a meal each day. Then slowly increase the amounts as it becomes a part of your diet and lessen the sugars.

Get Your Sleep. Go to bed about the same time each night and try to get up to 8 hours of sleep a day. Sleep helps your body repair and build your immune system.

Laugh. Research shows that laughter can help you overcome disease and illness. Read or watch something funny. Tell jokes.

Taking care of yourself will help you deal with the stress in you life. You are the most important person in your life so be sure to address your needs. You need to be in good mental and physical health if you plan to care for others.

Let’s make this a Happy and Health New Year!

DECEMBER STRESSORS

December can be a very stressful month…if we let it. Yes, we have a choice.

Ask yourself, “How do I react to a specific situation?”, “What do I have control over and what don’t I have control of?” Perception is the key element that we need to address during this demanding time.

Many of us try to do it ALL. Remember that the world will not end. We will still be loved. If our goal is to enjoy the process or time during this season, we will have a healthier focus.

Another important factor to remember is to get the sleep we need to function and to stay healthy. Sleep will help our immune system deal with the change in our schedules and the winter weather.

Eating healthy is one of the most difficult tasks during this time. Be sure to eat beautiful colors: red, green, orange and purple are foods that have a lot of antioxidants. Protein is needed to keep up your stamina.

When you don’t have the time to snack between meals, try the Dense Foods by Wholefoods Farmacy www.susanlifecoach.wholefoodfarmacy.com They have great snacks with nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables.

Lastly, this is a time when we expect more from family and friends. If we are alone we tend to feel sorry for ourselves. Focusing on how we can help others is a great way to overcome feelings of loneliness. Visiting a shelter or helping out at a soup kitchen helps us see that others might be struggling more than us. If you are with family or friends, try to enjoy the present and not read into comments or looks. When with family or friends it is very easy to try to please them or want to do what we “think” they want us to do. Set your goals and expectations for yourself. Others will adjust if they see that you are pleased with yourself.

Focus on the things you have accomplished and are doing. Overlook the negatives. We all make mistakes and no one is perfect! And remember to express your gratitude each morning and evening for what you have. This can be the best month of the year….if we see the good we are sharing.

Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

THE LITTLE THINGS

Ask yourself, “What two or three little things can I do today that will move me forward? BJ Gallagher

The little things add up. As we struggle along on our journey of life, we face times that seem to stop us from moving forward. We lose our focus. There are so many choices or diversions.

It is so important to write down each day what we want to accomplish. Take the time to focus on what we want from our day, our life. We need to remember that our goal is to make progress, not strive for perfection. Each step gets us closer to our destination. Inch by inch, we travel miles.

When our lives seem overwhelming, remember to put the big picture in the background and take a look at what little things you can do right now. Maybe you have a health issue or you’ve lost your job. Write down what you want in the end and when but then brainstorm all the things that you could do to get to that end or goal. List every possibility, no matter how ridiculous  it may sound.

Use that list to start moving forward, step by step each day. Pick one action and work to accomplish it. Celebrate each step that you make, no matter how little it is. Continue doing the things on your list till you reach your goal.

Remember that it is you who moves yourself forward. There are influences in your life but you are still deciding what you want and need.  Start right now!

Each day ask yourself, “What two or three little things can I do today that will move me forward? BJ Gallagher

Epigenomes?

Life is about choices we make. According to the Journal of American Medical Association (2002: 287:177) 90% of illness is affected by YOU! Only 10% of your health is affected by a physician or hospital.

How can this be? Researchers are learning that we have ‘markers’ or epigenomes that turn our genes on and off. This means that our

Lifestyle, Environment, and Stress can turn our genes on and off. Epigenomes seem to be more important than genes.

Therefore, we need to take responsibility for our own health!

LIFESTYLE: choose to eat a healthy diet, don’t smoke

STRESS: reduce the amount by finding ways to deal with it, such as exercise, meditation and pray.

ENVIRONMENT: limit or rid your surrounds of chemicals

Daily Ideas are:

Think GREEN foods, lessen the acidic foods you eat

Eat raw fruits and vegetables

Juicing

Clean your liver and colon through simple cleanses or fasting

Take supplements/herbs

Be aware of what your body is saying to you

Resolve any anger or emotional issues

We are learning that we have the ability to keep ourselves healthy or if we have illnesses we can reverse them by making different choices. This is an exciting time to live in. However, change can be scary and difficult. Medications are quick ‘fixes’ though the cause is not fixed. The symptoms are just covered up. So it is time to take a look at your health and decide what changes do you need and want to make so you can live a healthy life?

“May you never know the disease you prevent” by Jay Vanden Heuvel, PhD

Build Your Self Confidence

There seems to be a direct correlation between our self-confidence and our attitude and degree of success. The better our self-confidence the more positive is our attitude and in turn, the higher our degree of success in anything we do.

So why don’t we put our energy into building our self-confidence? We have a habit in our society to try to get rid of the symptom not the cause, so many times we feel frustrated or defeated as we try to make changes in our lives. When we get sick, we usually try to get rid of the symptoms, only to have new problems because we don’t understand that the cause needs to be addressed if we want to get rid of the illness for good. Knowing the cause is a big step to making positive change.

So how do we build our self-confidence?

It doesn’t improve overnight and we need to work on it everyday!

A pleasurable experience does the body and mind more good than stressful experiences does harm so create pleasurable experiences, which in turn helps you feel good about yourself. You will be more willing to do those things each day as well.

*Make a list of 10 things that are physically pleasurable to you. Do one thing on that list every day.

*Focus on what you do have and what you can do. It is easy to forget just how blessed we are. Be sure to express gratitude often for your talents and what you do have. Remember that what you focus on multiplies.

*Each day do something that challenges your abilities. It may be simple, like calling someone you need to call but don’t really want to. Or do something difficult like learning a new skill. Keep pushing your limits. It can be stressful but very rewarding when you have gotten through it and see that you can do anything if you put your mind to it.

*Practice positive self-talk at least once a day. Three times a day is best but at least once a day will help you see yourself in a positive view. You are talented and special. You need to keep reminding yourself as you go through a day that might not have the positive energy that you are looking for.
